This year the Rotary Big Knit will again be held in Holy Trinity Church, Cliftonville, on Saturday the 24th March between 2pm-5pm. The main charity will be Local Cancer Charities.
The Rotary Big Knit is a combination of fund raising and working with the community. It is a social fundraiser that attracts people of any age who do not normally enter sponsored events. In the 2010 and 2011 event, about 100 people took part, enjoying themselves knitting and socialising with other well-meaning people raising over £10,000.00 for local Alzheimer’s support services and The Pilgrims Hospice.
Participants from all over Thanet each cast on a row of 24 stitches. Sponsorship is paid for every inch in length knitted in one and half hours and for extra fun the longest length knitted wins the day. At our first 'Knit In' a number of entrants knitted over 16 inches, including our oldest entrant 90 years old Eve who managed to raise £107.
The clubs entered vary from the Broadstairs Sailing Club to Minster British Legion. The knitted lengths are used to make blankets.
